DVD update: week of Sept. 23

Susan Granger’s DVD UPDATE for week of Fri., Sept. 23:

Following its highly publicized premiere on TV’s Reez Channel, “The Kennedys” chronicles the scandal, tragedy and private turmoil of Massachusetts’ most fabled political family during one of the most momentous decades in US history, featuring Greg Kinnear as JFK, Katie Holmes as Jacqueline Kennedy, Barry Pepper as Robert Kennedy and Tom Wilkinson as patriarchal Joseph Kennedy.

Inspired by the true story of the 1953 “Last Great Air Race,” “Bride Flight” is the sudsy, fictionalized tale of a trio of lovely Dutchwomen who, eager to escape from post-WWII Holland, emigrate on a historic 13,000-mile KLM flight from England to New Zealand for what they envision as a better life.

Based on the hit Off-Broadway musical, “Forever Plaid: The Movie” tugs at the heart as well as the funny bone as a quartet called The Plaids is broadsided by a bus full of Catholic school girls in 1964 on their way to the Ed Sullivan Show; now they’re returning from the afterlife, nearly 50 years later, for one final chance at musical glory.

Golf enthusiasts will relish “Highlights of the 2011 Masters Tournament” and “Yes Sir! Jack Nicklaus and his Historic 1986 Masters Win,” while Yankee baseball fans will want “Baseball’s Greatest Games: Derek Jeter’s 3000th Hit.”

Winner of the Best Documentary prize at the Los Angeles Film Festival, “Make Believe” follows six of the world’s best young magicians as they compete to be Teen World Champion and take other adolescents on their personal journeys of transformation through magic.

Newest titles in the award-winning “Families of the World” series are “Families of Philippines” and “Families of Germany,” enabling future travelers to explore other cultures – from a child’s point of view.

For pre-schoolers from Scholastic/Weston Woods Studios, there’s “My First Collection, Volume 2, Featuring Spoon,” whimsically  teaching cooperation, friendship and problem-solving, and “Chrysanthemum…And Other Stories about Mischievous Mice and Adorable Animals.”

PICK OF THE WEEK: Starring Kristin Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne, Judd Apatow’s “Bridesmaids” is a sharp-yet-sweet, shockingly scatological, pre-marital caper, filled with bawdy, uninhibited babes. R-rated, it’s lewd and laugh-out-loud funny.
