week of Fri., Nov. 13: dvd/video update

Susan Granger’s dvd/video update for week of Fri., Nov. 13:

November marks National CareGivers Month and Ben Mittleman’s documentary “Dying to Live” puts a personal face on the inevitable issues we all face, probing deeply into mortality, spousal illness, parental dependence, the end-of-life and love – while Kate Churchill focuses on the practice of yoga in her breezy documentary “Enlighten Up.”

“Will Ferrell: You’re Welcome America, A Final Night with George W. Bush,” a journey through the life, legend and legacy of the 43rd U.S. President, is the 90-minute show that was filmed on Broadway.

In the gritty drama “Where God Left His Shoes,” John Leguizamo is a Gulf War veteran and washed-up prizefighter whose family is evicted from their home; his only hope for an apartment is to find a job by Christmas morning.

From the History Channel/A&E, “Doomsday 2012” is a fact-based examination of the doomsday foretold in the Mayan calendar, the Chinese oracle of the I Ching, etc. And “Before the Fall” finds the world facing devastation as a meteorite hurtles toward Earth

Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans team up in “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” as soldiers recruited by the international G.I. Joe military force, headed by Dennis Quaid, to save the world from the evil organization known as Cobra and a sinister Scottish arms dealer (Christopher Eccleston) who has created a terrifying new weapon.

“Summer’s Moon” stars “Twilight’s” Ashley Green as a young woman on a cross-country journey, searching for her estranged father, who is taken prisoner by a handyman.

“The Justice League: The Complete Series” is a gigantic 15-disc collectors set with all 91 action-packed episodes from the popular animated series plus lots of behind-the-scenes bonus features.

PICK OF THE WEEK: When Oscar nominations are announced, Disney/Pixar’s “Up” will be among them. Ed Asner voices a cantankerous widower who attaches thousands of helium balloons to his house and soars up and away, only to discover a pesky, eight year-old stowaway. Delicately touching on bittersweet themes of love and loss, along with the idea of escape and the importance of relationships, it’s a terrific, fun-filled ride.
